Survive a stroke

A stroke may be caused by a number of different factors, and there are a number of different kinds of stroke which are caused by different situations and/or prior medical conditions.  Strokes are also known as a CVA (Cerebrovascular Accident).

A TIA (Trans Ischemic Attack) is a temporary or “warning stroke” that last only a short time.  They are an important indicator of an impending stroke.

·
A thrombotic stroke is caused by atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, and as the arteries narrow a clot or thrombus forms in a small artery of the brain.

·
An embolic stroke is caused by a previously formed clot or thrombus in another part of the body, such as the heart or lower extremity veins, and migrates to the brain, causing blockage of a small artery.

·        A hemorrhagic stroke is caused by a ruptured or leaking aneurysm of a small artery in the brain.
Whether the stroke you are dealing with is within your own body or one of your family members, there are a number of things to know which are extremely important.

WARNING SIGNS OF STROKE
·
Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially if on only one side of the body
·
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
·
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
·
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

WHAT TO DO FOR A STROKE
·        If you or someone in your family (or even someone with you) has one or more of these signs, don’t delay!  Immediately call 911 and ask for an advanced life support ambulance to be sent.
·
Check the time, so you can tell the responders and/911 operator as well as the Emergency Room Personnel when the first symptoms occurred.
·
Immediate action is a must!  If given within three hours of the start of symptoms, a clot-busting drug such as TPA can reduce long-term disability or death for the most common type of stroke.
