WHAT IS IT?

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. This is caused when your body either doesn't make enough insulin, or doesn't properly use the insulin in your body.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

With Type 2 diabetes, high levels of sugar build up in your blood. This can lead to serious health issues.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

~ Greater need to urinate
~ Often feeling hungry or thirsty
~ Weight loss
~ Blurred vision
~ Very dry skin
~ Slow-healing sores
~ Tingling of hands or feet
~ Frequent infections

WHY SHOULD I BE CONCERNED ABOUT HIGH BLOOD SUGAR?

High blood sugar increases the risk and severity of:
    ~ Heart disease and stroke
    ~ High blood pressure
    ~ Eye problems
    ~ Kidney damage
    ~ Nerve damage

WHAT CAN I DO?
Keeping your blood sugar under control lowers your risk for health problems.

SOME BASIC TIPS ON CONTROLLING BLOOD SUGAR

1. Eat healthy foods
    ~ Avoid "jumbo" or "super-sized" to reduce calories
    ~ Choose grilled or broiled meats, chicken and fish
    ~ Use fat-free or light dressings
    ~ Avoid fried food, and choose chicken over beef
    ~ Limit cheeses like cheddar or American
    ~ Eat more vegetables, fruit and fish

2. Live a more active lifestyle
    ~ Walk instead of driving when you can
    ~ Take stairs instead of the elevator
    ~ Work in the yard or do some housecleaning every day

    ~ Park at the far end of the lot and walk to the store
    ~ Just find something that is exercise 30 minutes a day
3. Check your blood sugar regularly
4. Take your medicine as prescribed
5. Lose weight if you are overweight
6. Quit smoking
    ~ Your doctor or health-care provider can help you.
    ~ Smoking and diabetes is a bad mix, as damage can occur to the cardiovascular system due to the nicotine.
